This awaits you

This is a special one, a long day out on the bike in October so be prepared for all kind of weather. The Germans have a good saying about it, so don't bail out because of some drops of rain.

Important: There is the option of course to go for the full route, which will be 200km. But there is also the option to take the train back from Garmisch which will result in a ride of around 126km.

We'll be riding one of the routes of the Orbit360 gravel series from 2024. The route we will be riding is Galactic Gearshift, which was scouted by Lisa Winkler. But to make the starting point easier to reach and the route harder to ride we will adjust it a little so we end up with the following statistics (according to Komoot):

Distance: 200 km

Elevation: 3510 m

Offroad: 61%

Tarmac: 39%

Orbit360

The Orbit360 gravel series started as a DIY cycling event where routes are being scouted by local riders to raise money to support cycling-related non-profit organisations and climate initiatives. This year the charity is 'The Generation Forest'. Everyone who will participate this day will need to make a donation, you decide how much. Donations can be done via this link: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=8T3AWB7UAHZD2

More information on Orbit360 and their gravel series can be found here: https://www.orbit360.cc/gravel-serie

Starting point and time

Start location will be Lenggries Bahnhof at 07:30. The first train from Munich Hbf will get you there in time (which leaves at 06:02), the other alternative is to get there by car since there is free parking at the bahnhof.

Route and riding style

Today is not about speed, but you'll understand that a steady pace will be needed to complete this one in a fun way. We're aiming for an average of around 18-20 km/h when possible, which means about ten hours of moving time, without breaks. The last train back to Munich leaves at 22:45, so we have plenty of time.

We'll try to ride together as much as possible, but as it happens during big climbs the group will fall apart. We'll regroup after those sections. Just know that this isn't a classic group ride where we stick in each other's wheel for the whole ride. If the group is big it is possible that smaller groups are being formed so that everyone can enjoy their day. Because of that it's important that you have the route on your own device, so you never depend on the rider in front of you.

The full route is 200 km and you can find the route here: https://www.komoot.com/tour/3292498640?share_token=a4jOBBX3Ik4Q3DiA1piCHHdTXkHbiwQfp3moHYUAW0p6FlsaC2

If you think this is too much but you do want to join for the first part, there is an escape train at Garmisch-Partenkirchen at around 126 km.

Resupply

We will pass by towns like Mittenwald, Ehrwald, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Wallgau so there are plenty of options. Just prepare so you can ride for around 3 hours without resupply minimum.

Finish

Our finish location will be: Hirschbachstüberl in Lenggries (https://maps.app.goo.gl/GGktjWMu5kaU8NJt5). This is only a 3 minute bike ride away from Lenggries Bahnhof, so a perfect spot to recover with food and drinks before making the journey back to Munich.

Important info

The season can be interesting and therefore everyone needs to be prepared very well! Some essentials that need to be brought/taken care of:

- Good bike lighting (front and rear) that lasts long enough and makes it safe to ride on trails in the dark. We start and finish in the dark, so don't skip this one.

- Warm layers and if needed rain gear

- Snacks and water

- Repair tools

- Tyres of 40 mm or wider are highly recommended.

- As said it is not a classic group ride, so be prepared to ride some meters on your own. But we'll always regroup after big climbs/descends.

And needless to say, but has to be said: everyone joins on their own responsibility.

Gonna be good!
